JOHOR BARU: The recently concluded two-day Iskandar Malaysia Corridor and City Transformation Programme exhibition and information day was an eye opener to many visitors.
Held at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre, it was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on March 9 during his working visit to Johor.
Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) chief executive officer Ismail Ibrahim said the event was a good platform for Irda to reach out to the members of the public.
Getting it right: Students from SMK Tun Syed Nasir Ismail Johor Baru watching KFCH International College lecturer Mohd Zulhilmi Abu Bakar doing fruit carving demonstration.
“After this, the exhibition will be on at its permanent venue at the Iskandar Malaysia Information Centre (IMIC) in Danga Bay and we hope more visitors will come to visit the centre,” he told StarMetro.
Ismail said investors, small and medium enterprises and entrepreneurs would have a better understanding on the opportunities and growth prospects offered by Iskandar Malaysia.
Iskandar Malaysia is the first economic growth corridor launched in the country on Nov 4, 2006, covering 2,217 sq km and located in the southern most part of Johor.
As of Dec 31, 2011, it had received RM84bil in committed cumulative investments of which 45% have been deployed in several economic sectors undertaken by the public and the private sectors.
“We welcome feedback and suggestions from all parties as the progress and development in Iskandar Malaysia will benefit all stakeholders directly and indirectly,” added Ismail.
Irda is the regulatory authority mandated to plan, promote and facilitate the development of Iskandar Malaysia into a strong and sustainable metropolis of international standing by 2025.

Meanwhile, businessman Wong Chee Jin, 54, who came with his family to the convention centre commended the good job done by Irda over the last five years.
However, he said more must be done to reach the public and regularly update them on the progress made by Iskandar Malaysia as majority of them are still not aware on the development in the growth corridor.
“Personally, I think this kind of exhibition should be held at shopping complexes where the crowds are bigger,” said Wong.
Form Four student Atikah Fadhilah Haminor from SMK Tun Syed Nasir Ismail Johor Baru was lost for words when asked how well she knew about Iskandar Malaysia.
Atikah who came with her 33 schoolmates said the only thing that crossed her mind was the Bas Iskandar Malaysia as she frequently used the bus services.
Her colleague Norshafina Idros said she knew about Iskandar Malaysia from reading newspapers and taking part in activities organised by Irda at its headquarters in Danga Bay.
“I’m interested to work in the Information and Creative Technology industries and there are many job opportunities in the sector in Iskandar Malaysia in years to come,” she said.
