Final Tips for Final Exam
by Tara Ooi
FINAL examinations for this semester are just a week away, or maybe some of you are even in the midst of it already. To make matters worse, you haven’t started anything or you couldn’t remember a thing you have just read at all no matter how many countless times you’ve tried. Well, don’t panic yet and start switching on the “emo” mode, here are some last minute tips that may come in handy for you to prepare yourself for the papers:
Use Mind Mapping
Mind Map
Mind map is a non-linear visualized tool that centers itself on a key words or an idea; as shown in the image above. To use mind-mapping effectively, start by drawing one out after reading a chapter or a subtopic. To add some fun to your studies, try drawing to help explain or enhance the learning process of the chapter you had just covered or you can always just use different colors for different texts. A study by Huchendorf (2007) has stated that warm colors helps to recall what you have wrote or seen better, so use red or yellow to assist you in your studies.
Take breaks in between
Break

Like how most of your classes have breaks in between, do the same for your study. Take a short break for 10 – 15 minutes by indulging yourself in simple activities such as a short nap, a walk around your house or just grab and sink yourself into the wonders of a chocolate bar.
Have Group Studies
George Squared Students

Grab a friend or two and have a last minute crash course discussion. Ask your friend to further explain a topic if you do not understand and hopefully they do know a thing or two about it. Help one another to remember the key points of the subject by having a Q&A (question and answer) session. Just keep in mind that the purpose of your meet up is to study, not to slack and do silly stuff together, gossiping or stalk others on any forms of social media.
Rest early
Rest

A common issue that most students always do on a day or a week before the examination is to burn the midnight oil. This is actually a bad routine especially for the brain. Brain cells are only able to function at its optimal level when one has the right amount of sleep. Lack of sleep causes your brain power to slow down, thus retrieving any necessary memory for the paper may be difficult to do so.
Calm yourself down
calm

5 – 10 minutes before the examination begins, do not read any last minute materials hoping to remember something out of it. Rather, take this moment to calm yourself down as your brain has undergone a stressful day while you were trying your best to force any memories in. Don’t think of anything and just close your eyes and take five deep breaths; this method will help you to relax not only your brain but also your anxiety that has been built up.
All in all, remember to always keep your body hydrate and a reminder, always study smart and not study hard. I hope that these five last minute tips would be able to help you to prepare for your final examination and I wish you all the best in your final examination. Good luck guys!
