Pharmacy

Overview
This course offers studies to safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs.

Learning Overview
• Learning of the fundamentals of diseases.

• To master the sources of drugs, chemical composition, manufacturing methods, 

and the concept of their usefulness, and other professional knowledge.

• Learning of medicine preparation according to doctors’ prescriptions, advice to patients 

and medical personnel of drugs’ usage, management and operation of pharmacy, 

procurement of drugs, monitoring of drug usage safety.

a) Pharmaceutical Chemistry

b) Pharmaceutical Technology

c) Pharmacology

d) Physiology

e) Clinical Pharmacy

f) other areas such as anatomy, histology, microbiology, pathology, drug analysis, 

bio-pharmaceutical technology, pharmacognosy, pharmacokinetics, bio-pharmacy, 

pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacoeconomics, drug therapy, laws pertaining to drugs and etc.

Job Prospects
• Pharmacists.  Employment: Public or private medical institutions, clinics, community clinics 

or other medical institutions.  Main job functions: medical preparation for patients with minor

illnesses, provide appropriate medical advices and information, guidance on medical 

equipment usage, and recommend appropriate medical assistance.

• Medical supervisor in government sectors (drugs monitoring and controlling in 

pharmaceutical industry, such as routine inspections, drug registration, drug safety 

monitoring or investigations of illegal drug)

• Executive personnel in drugs management, production, quality control, sales, research 

and development, registration.  Employment: pharmaceutical manufacturers, drug wholesalers.

• Lecturers
Note: According to existing regulations, pharmacy graduates must undergo one year of 

internship in any institutions acknowledged by Pharmaceutical Board or government.  

Due to the lack of pharmaceutical professionals, since 2005, the Government had made 

it compulsory for pharmacy graduates to work at least 3 years in government institutions, 

as the pre-requisite to register as professional pharmacists.  Thereafter, they are required

to renew their licenses with Malaysia Pharmaceutical Board annually.
